Interface design for smart cart device
December 18, 2008
This is a part of the group project building smart shopping cart for a supermarket chain in town called Co.opMart.
My responsibility is to design the device interface. I have never worked this hard before in designing something I have little interest for (device? it sound too technical for me, and I don’t like things technically complicated
). This is also the first time I do this type of design, tasks are to make the interface look professional and belivable, but still friendly. The logo of Co.op Mart is put at top left, the color of the device should go well with the logo also.
After 3 day working solidly these are the results , hope that they please your eyes and you may find them interesting to shop around the supermarket with a smart device
).
Some descriptions about this device:
+It’s touch-screen device. It’s placed in every cart in our supermarket.
+You need a membership card (which can obtain easily by signing up with the nearest Co.op Mart) to power on the device.
+A welcome page will appear asking which language you want to use.
+Information page hold all information related to Co.op Mart, promotion deals, new products..
+Search for and choose the product you want to buy, information and location of that product will be displayed on product pages.
+You after that can go to the place the device has shown you (on the map) to pick up the product.
+Add product to cart by using barcode reader placed at the right of the device, after the barcode is entered to the device automatically when you pass the barcode corner of the product through the cart reader, a screen will appear asking you the quantity you want to purchase.
+The products will be added to your cart with price of each kind. My cart function allowed you to review all of them with total price. You can always edit your cart by clicking “del” to delete one and pass the product through barcode reader to add one .

*The right hand blank places* in many screen shots are for the final work where we will put changing .gif banner (which are done by another member in our team – Viet) on it ^^ , an example here:

The device and its location in the cart has also been designed by another member in our team (Quynh) , these are Co.op Mart smart cart device example
Though some people complain about the color of my interface, I’m still satisfied with it now ^^
Woohoo after three day without sleeping (m lying,

Hope I can get a good sleep now ^^() ..

New Logo for the company Bettencourt Green Building Supplies
December 13, 2008
This is a group assignment in Content Design Project class..
Basically, Bettencourt Green Building Supplies is a company based in Brooklyn , NY, specialized in providing quality green building materials to designers, architects, contractors and homeowners on the East Coast,USA. They have been there for quite a long time ( around 8 years) but haven’t gained a lot of attention from the public. Supposed that this year they want to change their image and attract more local customer, our team were asked to research and design their new logo.
Firstly after meeting with the client, researching about the company and brainstorming, we have home up with the theme of the company which consist of 3 things:
+ Eco-friendly company
+ Providing high quality supplies ( sustainable products)
+ Together with specialized service ( They are not only delivering the product, but also give customers aesthetic suggestion/ consultant from experienced professional staffs with strong knowledge about both the products and specialized fields – design/architect…)
These above are the most important aspects that the company want to promote itself publicly, in short , we can say in one sentence that Bettencourt Green Building Supplies is a company doing their business in 2 points : delivering high quality green building products and giving their customers valuable aesthetic suggestions.
Our chosen concept is “Bettencourt treasures the nature”.
Firstly we want to express the all the aspects in the logo plus the idea that Bettencourt will be a key (the solution) to the environment problems.
The brain storming process and logo shape sketching are happening with results are these drafts :
With illustrator we come up with several designs:
However, another meeting with the client (here is our lecturer) has taken us to a point that our designs have some problems:
+ If we want to put all the idea into one logo, the logo will not have any strong impact, because all the elements are equally important.
+the Bettencourt word looks like have been divided in to 2, the B and the ettencourt.
+ Client however likes the idea of the first “B” only without the “ettencourt”, and they like how we put 2 leaves inside the B shape instead of using the counters as usual. And the leaves themselves have special meaning too.
After coming back home and refine our logo, we have this final one:
We choose to present the pictorial typed logo next to the signiture, because Bettencourt company is a new thing to most of people, and if the B shape stand alone, they will not be able to know what is the company and what they are doing. We recommend the company to use this at the first time when they used the new logo, after a while when they have already gained popularity, they can drop the signature and keep the pictorial part.
The pictorial part only, have some hidden meanings:
+the two leaves represent two aspects in the company business.
+B shape is for Bettencourt (ofcourse!)
+Round shape is for protecting and make the B stronger, more appealing, and plus circle will never goes out of style you can believe that the logo can live long.
+ The only green leaf (which is also the only element in green in the whole logo) represent the nature and the specialized service of Bettencourt, which their competitors do not have.
+ The brown leaf is for the product, brown is the color of wood, bamboo, coconut, .. which are the product materials.
+ Putting 2 leaves inside the B and the B inside the circle mean B company will be strong with their 2 concern aspects.
Looking at the company current website :
we can see that they also use brown and dark green colors. However the green is too dark that sometimes is mistaken with gray and the brown is too light sometimes is seen as orange. As a solution, we keep the colors, but modify them a little , to make green is real green, so that the viewer can linked to nature in their head when looking at the logo, and brown is real brown not orange, so it will not be thinked of anything elses but the wood
. We understand that companies’re often afraid of changes, especially when they have been used to something for quite a long time (to Bettencourt, 8 years), by doing this, the company will not be worried abou too much changes, since their primary colors is basically kept the same, just the effectiveness will be more appealing and stronger.
Well that was my point and if you are interested in the project, please find the powerpoint slide attacked here :”> We made an presentation at Melbourne Theater of RMIT campus last week and I was the presenter ^^ We did the presentation quite good I believe.
Have a nice day guys ~

3D street art
April 21, 2008
Hey, have you ever heard about something called 3D street painting? Now 3D street painting is considered as one of the new contemporary art already
Of course street painting means that drawing on the street ground/ or most likely the pavement, but it’s not an easy job at all, because the artist has to make the painting become 3D. Famous 3D street painters/ artists like Julian Breever even have made artworks look so much like real objects that many people have mistaken their art with real things. What really interesting is, you can only see the paintings as 3D object from some particular angles, so when you don’t look at them from specific positions, you may not be able to recognize what is that, or you can only think that it’s only a 2D strange painting. That’s why the best way for people to enjoy this type of painting is looking at the results through photographs.
3D street painters have to study several techniques before they can start drawing, there’re some rules in drawing on the street. Example, It’s not like that you simply draw a chicken on the street and it become 3D right away. No, no and no. First the artists come up with the idea of what they want to draw, then they sketch the picture on a paper, and then they have to re-draw the picture in specific ratio for 3D street painting. Sometimes professional artist don’t need to re-draw the picture because they can math the ratio in their head. However, it’s strongly recommend when you are a newcomer or the 3D street painting you are drawing is huge.
Examples of what is street painting art:

Recently, my friend Nhat Anh who is studying Design HED and also in our dim2 class ( diffirent group ) had an idea to made this kind of painting as a background for his final project. That idea sounds really cool and interesting to me, so I said yes right away when he asked me to give him a hand. Thus, me, Nhat Anh and our other 3 friends have spent our time during and over the weekend to finish this “RMIT pool”.
Here’s the process of making our “pool”:
1. Thinking about what the painting will be. Sketch out the image and put it in right ratio (this process is done on illustrator).
2. Find a suitable place, buy the suitable crayons and begin to “draw” on the ground ( cost a lot of time T.T), but the process is pretty much fun! ^^
3. Finish !!! Now you can see our final result for real at the new canteen in our school from Monday to Wednesday (21-24/4-08) , and of course take a picture with it , join the project to raise the charity fund too if you care
) Hope you will enjoy it. Have a nice day ^^
